Goal Progress: Update #49, March 2019

It’s been 49 months since we set a goal to pay off the mortgage (on our condo) and to have a net worth of at least $1M by 2020. This is the 49th update on the progress of the goal. If you’re wondering why we set this goal, click here.

This is an interesting time in the world. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed a lot of things. I hope people can come together to help each other out and learn from this. We have been mostly staying at home together. We do try to get outside every day but are trying our best to practice social distancing. I won’t say much about it here. Just stay safe everyone!

The stock market is currently down about 28% off of its all-time high from last month. As you can see, my investments are down a good amount (almost $100k!), but that’s ok. I’m investing with a long-term perspective, and I didn’t have the foresight to see how bad this was going to get. It may go down a bit more from here, but if you’re young, this is a good time to be deploying capital. I have taken an interest in trading options and am exploring that a bit. If you want to trade options for free, check out Robinhood (referral link).

My parents are looking to move down to the area from Rhode Island. I just closed on a 7/1 ARM @ 2.79% cash-out refi (funds haven’t hit account yet, so numbers aren’t updated yet). With the cash-out and some cash I set aside, I’m hoping to make a down payment on another property. Either we’ll move and my parents can rent our house, or we’ll buy another house for them to rent. They don’t want to own anymore.

My UVA CFP class is no longer meeting in person. We had class last night via Zoom conference call. This is how it’s going to be for the rest of the semester.

The marathon I was supposed to run next weekend got postponed. I’m enjoying taking a break from running, but I hope to get back into it later this year.

Here’s this month’s update:

Net worth calculation:

Total Assets: $936,453.88

Primary residence: $580,000

Cash and cash equivalents: $18,339.10

Investments (including retirement): $338,114.78

Total Liabilities: $258,978.16

Mortgage on Primary Residence: $258,978.16

Net worth = $936,453.88 – $258,978.16 = $677,475.72

All of our debt is mortgage debt on a 30-yr fixed 3.25% mortgage on our primary residence.

Net worth progress:

Tracking your net worth is a good way to assess your financial health and see how you’re doing each month. I use Personal Capital to help me track my net worth. I highly recommend it.

Net worth = assets – liabilities, or everything we own minus everything we owe. I’m not including our cars here, which are both paid off, to keep the calculation a little simpler. I am including an estimate of home equity.

I am using my knowledge as a realtor to provide estimates of value for our real estate.

Our net worth decreased by a whopping $97,175.62 to $677,475.72.
