Goal Progress: Update #42, August 2019

It’s been 42 months since we set a goal to pay off the mortgage (on our condo) and to have a net worth of at least $1M by 2020. This is the 42nd update on the progress of the goal. If you’re wondering why we set this goal, click here.

This month, we spent another 2 weeks traveling to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday in Pennsylvania and my mother’s birthday in Rhode Island. We had a good time and ate some delicious food, but I think next time we’ll fly to Rhode Island. A 7-8 hour drive (each way) turned into 10+ hour drives because of traffic on the way up and additional stops on the way down.

We stopped at Sushi Palace in Yonkers, NY (it was so-so) on the way up and the Sushi Palace in Hamden, CT (go to this one) on the way down. All of the locations are independently owned and are not related to each other at all. Sushi Palace is an AYCE, made to order sushi restaurant. At $21.95 for adults, it is a great deal. There are locations in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and some other places. The Hamden, CT location is one of my favorite places to go whenever I get an opportunity to go.

The stock market has been on a wild ride in August. Remember, asset allocation is responsible for 90% of returns. I sometimes have a hard time following this advice. Even with some extra income this month, our net worth didn’t increase as much because a decrease in the value of investments.

I’ve been consistently running for almost 3 months now and ran a sub-7 minute pace 5k this morning for the first time in about a decade. I’ve upped my mileage to about 30 miles/week. The Herndon Half Marathon is a month away. I’m excited but nervous.

The kids are growing up, and I’m excited for my son to start Pre-K next week. I think it will be good for him to have some structure in his life again. The summer has been a little difficult, especially on my wife.

Here’s this month’s update:

Net worth calculation:

Total Assets: $1,043,553.80

Primary residence: $560,000

Cash and cash equivalents: $17,343.66

Investments (including retirement): $466,210.14

Total Liabilities: $320,000

Mortgage on Primary Residence: $320,000

Net worth = $1,043,553.80 – $320,000 = $723,553.80

All of our debt is mortgage debt on a 30-yr fixed 3.25% mortgage on our primary residence.

Net worth progress:

Tracking your net worth is a good way to assess your financial health and see how you’re doing each month. I use Personal Capital to help me track my net worth. I highly recommend it.

Net worth = assets – liabilities, or everything we own minus everything we owe. I’m not including our cars here, which are both paid off, to keep the calculation a little simpler. I am including an estimate of home equity.

I am using my knowledge as a realtor to provide estimates of value for our real estate.

Our net worth increased by $9,503.60 to $723,553.80.

  1. FYI- Sushi Palace in North Haven is better fish, better parking, bigger space! Same “chain” but the North Haven one is a hundred times easier and more convenient food-wise, even if it is a little ways up 91N.

It’s been inspiring to read about your progress!
